Headstalls

A headstall is the part of a western bridle that fits over the horse’s head and holds the bit in position. It works with the bit and reins to create a complete bridle setup and helps keep the bit properly positioned for clear, consistent communication between horse and rider.

A browband headstall uses a band across the horse’s forehead to help keep the bridle stable and centered. A one-ear, or sliding-ear, headstall uses a leather ear loop that slides along the crown so it can be positioned for the horse’s ear. A split-ear headstall has a fixed slit cut into the crown leather for one ear, creating a cleaner, more minimal design with no sliding loop. The best style depends on your horse’s head shape, the bit being used and your preferred look.

A properly fitted headstall should hold the bit in the correct position without pulling it too high into the corners of the mouth or allowing it to hang too low. The crown should sit comfortably behind the ears, and browbands or ear pieces should lie flat without pinching. Adjust both sides evenly so the bit remains centered.

Choose a headstall with enough adjustment to position the bit correctly while keeping the crown and cheek pieces proportionate to your horse’s head. Most western headstalls offer multiple buckle holes for adjustment, but horses with especially small, refined or large heads may need a more specifically sized style.

Western headstalls may use Chicago screws, leather ties, water ties, buckles or other bit-end attachments depending on the style. Each option creates a slightly different look and makes changing bits easier or more traditional. Check the product construction to choose the attachment style you prefer.

Most traditional western headstalls are made from leather, including harness, bridle or latigo leathers, while some styles may incorporate nylon or other materials. Leather headstalls can range from clean, work-ready designs to more decorative styles featuring tooling, buckstitching, silver-tone hardware or specialty finishes.

Look for quality leather, smooth finished edges, secure stitching, dependable hardware and enough adjustment for proper bit placement. Details such as weighted leather, hand-rubbed finishes, decorative tooling or premium buckles may add durability, feel or style depending on how you ride.

Usually, yes, as long as the headstall fits the horse correctly and the bit-end attachment works with the bit. If you switch between bits with very different ring or shank sizes, recheck the cheek-piece adjustment so the new bit sits correctly.

Inspect your headstall regularly, especially around buckle holes, bit ends, stitching and folds near the crown and cheeks. Replace or repair components that show cracking, tearing, stretched holes, loose hardware or weakened stitching before they fail during use.

Wipe away sweat, dirt and dust after use and clean the leather periodically with products designed for tack. Condition as needed to keep the leather supple, and allow damp leather to dry naturally away from direct heat. Store the headstall in a dry area where it can hang without sharp folds.
