Choose a standard hay bag when quick filling and easier access to hay are the priorities. Choose a slow-feed design when you want smaller openings that extend eating time and reduce the amount of hay pulled out at once.

Smaller openings generally slow consumption more than larger openings, but they may frustrate a horse that has never used a slow feeder. The collection includes a net with approximately 1¾-inch openings and a bag with openings around 3 by 2 inches, so choose according to the horse’s experience and feeding needs.

A structured bag contains the hay more fully and may be easier to position against a trailer wall. The 45-degree hay bag is specifically designed for side loading and includes an anti-twirl loop, making it a practical option when refilling without removing the bag matters.

Capacity differs by design. The slow-feed hay bag is described as holding approximately two average-size flakes, while larger bale nets are intended for substantially more hay, so compare capacity with the length of the trip or feeding period.

Hang it high enough that the horse cannot stick a foot through the openings or become caught in a loose strap, but not so high that dust and hay continually fall into the horse’s eyes and nostrils. The safest height depends on the horse, bag design, and whether it is used in a stall, trailer, or turnout area.

A mesh bottom allows loose dust and small hay particles to fall out instead of accumulating inside the bag. Choose this feature when easier cleaning matters, but inspect the mesh regularly because damaged sections can create larger openings or loose material.

Inspect the hanging straps, clips, seams, netting, and feed openings for wear or stretching. Secure all loose ends and replace a damaged bag promptly, since torn mesh or an overly long strap can increase the risk of a hoof, halter, or shoe becoming caught.
